Part-time Study
Environmental Management and Technology
Program Overview
In response to a growing demand for environmental professionals, RIT created the nation’s first BS degree in environmental management and technology in 1991. This baccalaureate degree program prepares its graduates to work as environmental project managers and program managers both in industry and in government.
In 2000, the BS in safety technology program was added. With its roots in the environmental curriculum, this program is built on current and emerging strategies for managing the safety aspects of an organization. This program is one of only a handful in the country offering a bachelor’s degree in safety, and does so in an online learning format.
There are a number of other certificates and distance learning options available, please visit our website at www.rit.edu/~704www to learn more.
Compliance with environmental regulation may be the first order of business for the environmental manager, but it is not the only level at which the game is played. Indeed, for some organizations, environmental compliance represents no more than table stakes in a much broader and more interesting intrigue. According to the Global Environmental Management Institute, such organizations may “…recognize environmental management as among the highest corporate priorities and as a key determinant to sustainable development…”
Generally, there are three levels of environmental commitment that determine the type of environmental activities most likely to be performed by an environmental manager:
1) Compliance with environmental regulations,
2) Development and attainment of environmental goals and
policies, and
3) Integration of environmental management strategies across
the organization.
Each level incorporates the substance of the subordinate levels. Depending upon the level of commitment and the environmental managers level of responsibility, he or she may participate in activities at any or all levels. RIT prepares its students for a full range of environmental management responsibilities in this exciting and rapidly expanding field. Graduates gain both in-depth scientific and technical expertise, plus essential familiarity with environmental law, policy, finance, and public relations. Although many of the courses are available online, the entire BS is not available entirely online.
