Write a 3-4 page report on a consultation/problem solving interview you observe in your practicum setting. In a written report, indicate the following:

    • What was the issue the consultee was concerned about?
    • What problem solving steps did you see occurring?
    • What techniques did you observe that were particularly effective?
    • What techniques did you observe that were particularly ineffective?
    • What consultation skills did you see the consultant using?
    • What were any unique aspects of the consultee that you noticed and impacted the nature of the consultation?
    • Was the target issue specifically defined?
    • Was the target behavior accurately identified?
    • Did you feel like the issue was thoroughly analyzed? If not, what was missing in your opinion?
    • What would you do differently?
  1. Midterm Due: Tuesday 1/15/08

Cumulative in-class exam on materials reviewed up to this point in the quarter.

  1. In-class consultation progress report Due: Tuesday 1/22/08
  • Brief in-class report (approx. 10 minutes) on your consultation project:
  • Who is the consultee?
  • Why did you choose this consultation?
  • What have you done so far?
  • How is it going?
  • Chance to ask for help/feedback from classmates.
  1. Consultation Case Due: Tuesday 2/12/08

Each student will be expected to carry an on-going consultation case. This can be with a teacher, a parent, or other school administrator/faculty. You will be expected to meet with the person you are consulting with 4-6 times depending on the nature of the consultation and to keep field notes following each meeting. Your report will describe the stages of your consultation relationship and outcome information. More specific information about the details of the consultation will be distributed in class. Write up will be 5-7 pages plus copies of your field notes.

  1. Inservice presentation Due: Tuesday 2/19/08

In groups of three, prepare a 30 minute brief inservice or workshop aimed toward teachers, parents, administrators, or some other organizational unit. Topics will be discussed and selected in class. Each group will present their inservice to the class and provide materials to the class so that the inservice can be recreated in the future.

Relative assignment weights for course grades:

  • Consultation Observation 15%
  • Midterm 25%
  • In-class consultation progress report 10%
