Austin McChord is the founder, CEO and driving force behind Datto, a privately-held data protection company formed in 2007. A Connecticut native, McChord started the company in his parent’s basement after completing his degree in bioinformatics at RIT. In 2014, the company announced it would open a Rochester office at 40 Franklin Street, a building that also houses RIT’s Center for Urban Entrepreneurship.
“Austin McChord embodies the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit that is RIT,” said RIT President Bill Destler. “We are so proud of all he has accomplished, and what he has brought back to the Rochester community. Our graduating students and their families will find his story inspiring.”
Under his leadership, Datto has experienced incredible growth, making the coveted Inc. 500 list of fastest growing companies for three consecutive years and now employing more than 700 employees at locations around the world. In addition to the corporate headquarters in Norwalk, Connecticut, the company has offices in Boston, Rochester, Portland, Toronto, London, Sydney, and Singapore. Datto is the recipient of numerous industry awards, for company growth, product excellence and technical support. Today, Datto backs up, restores and protects critical business data on every continent except Antarctica.
McChord holds several patents related to virtual machines and network storage. McChord was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2015 as a leader in Enterprise Technology and won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year New York Award in 2016. He sits on the Board of the Connecticut Technology Council and is a member of the RIT board of trustees.
