Parsian K. Mohseni
Kate Gleason College of Engineering
Dr. Parsian K. Mohseni is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Microelectronic Engineering in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering. His research aims to unravel the interplay between the synthesis mechanisms and emergent properties of nanoscale materials toward the development of low-weight and flexible optoelectronic devices.
Dr. Mohseni investigates how the synthesis-structure-property relationships of semiconductor materials can be engineered at the nanometer scale. His group uses advanced “bottom-up” epitaxial crystal growth methods, as well as novel “top-down” nanofabrication techniques, to create nanowires, quantum dots, and nanotextured surfaces. By manipulating how atomic groups assemble during bottom-up synthesis, and how they are selectively dissolved during top-down etching, Dr. Mohseni’s group can control light-matter interactions and charge carrier dynamics. In collaboration with researchers at Harvard University, Cornell University, US Army Research Laboratory, and National Institute of Standards and Technology, Dr. Mohseni and his team integrate their nanosystems into sophisticated device architectures for ultra-high responsivity photodetectors and high-efficiency solar cells.
Recently, the Mohseni Research Group has explored the epitaxial growth and interlayer properties of mixed-dimensional heterostructures (collaboration with Pennsylvania State University). Dr. Mohseni’s graduate students are currently investigating how nanophotonic absorbers can be engineered for selective narrowband infrared detection (collaboration with Åbo Akademi University) and how silicon-based metamaterials can provide efficient platforms for optical neuromorphic computing (collaboration with Howard University).
Dr. Mohseni holds B.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering Physics from McMaster University. Prior to joining the RIT faculty, he conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research is funded through multiple National Science Foundation (NSF) grants as well as industrial support. His work has resulted in over 50 peer-reviewed publications and has been featured in MIT Technology Review and IEEE Spectrum, amongst others. Dr. Mohseni is a Senior Member of the IEEE and an organizing committee member of the Electronic Materials Conference.
