RIT Global

This program is a five-week program of intensive Japanese language and culture at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan. Students will earn 6 credits in Japanese language and culture taught by both RIT and Doshisha University faculty. Credits are applicable to RIT General Education credits.

Courses:

  • Intermediate Japanese I (intensive language course)
  • Traditions of Modern Japan (culture course)
    • History of Japan including a focus on Kyoto and Osaka
    • Historical significance of temples and shrines in Kyoto and Osaka
    • Traditional cultural activities - Ikebana (flower arrangement) and tea ceremony
    • Learn the customs and ways of living in Japan

Students will be enrolled in a spring 2019 course, which will meet weekly to learn about the history of the Kyoto and Osaka region, aspects of Japanese traditional culture and prepare for your overseas travel. In the summer, you will complete the culture course as well as take a language course which will advance your Japanese writing and speaking skills. 

Excursions:

  • Day trips to historical sites in Nara and Kyoto as part of the Traditions of Modern Japan culture course
  • Hands-on culture experience workshops (flower arranging, tea ceremony)

Housing:
Students will stay in shared hotel rooms in downtown Kyoto (about a 35 minute train commute to the Doshisha Kyotanabe campus and also participate in a one-week home stay with a local Japanese family.

Meals:

  • The Doshisha Kyotanabe campus has several cafeterias that have inexpensive meals (approximately $6-$7 USD)
  • Grocery stores, convenience stores and restaurants are within walking distance from the hotel and campus.
