The Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) / German Academic Exchange Service is a private, publicly funded, self governing organization of higher education institutions in Germany. DAAD promotes international academic relations and cooperation by offering mobility programs primarily for students and faculty, but also for administrators and others in the higher education realm.

Semester Scholarships

- Current undergraduate student
- U.S. Citizen
- Must be planning an overseas program in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand
- Planning to study in a country of which you are not a citizen
Note: If awarded a Boren scholarship you are placed in a paid position within the federal government for one year after graduation.
Application Process
As part of the application, you would need to submit an application form, an unofficial transcript, two essays and two letters of recommendation. The Boren Awards give preference to programs based on their duration, focus on intensive study of a preferred language in a preferred country, and the applicant’s field of study.

Between $8,000-$20,000 for undergraduate, up to 24,000 for graduate study
Applicants must reside in, currently study in or hold citizenship of the United States, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey or Ukraine. Applicants must be currently enrolled students or recent graduates meeting one of the following criteria OR Professionals who graduated from such programs in 2013 or 2014 are also eligible to apply.
DIS offers need and merit-based awards and is committed to supporting students with limited financial resources, from diverse backgrounds, and/or underrepresented populations in study abroad. On average, over 50% of all students receive financial support from DIS, and many more are using financial aid granted from their home institutions towards their DIS experience as well. DIS also includes Pell Grant eligibility and work-study awards from home institutions in our award considerations.
The combined maximum scholarship for any individual student is $5,000 per semester. During the summer, awards range from $250-$1,000 depending on program cost and duration.

DIS Scholarship
Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need. Applications for need-based scholarships will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and you will hear back within 1-2 weeks after your scholarship application is submitted. Applications submitted after the final deadlines above will be considered if funds are still available.
Diversity Scholarship
Awarded to support students from populations that are underrepresented in study abroad, including but not limited to diverse ethnic, racial, cultural, socioeconomic, or educational backgrounds, sexual orientation, disability, age, etc.
DIS Merit-Based Scholarship Funds
DIS offers two competitive, merit-based awards. One student is selected as the recipient of the $10,000 award. Please take note of the deadlines listed on the DIS website – DIS will not accept late applications for merit-based awards. Applicants will hear back within two weeks of the posted deadlines.
You are welcome to submit applications for both need- and merit-based awards, but if you are chosen as the recipient of a merit-based award, you will not qualify for need-based funding as well.
Jacob Buksti Memorial Scholarship
This merit-based award honors a beloved former DIS faculty member, Jacob Buksti, who passed away in 2016. Jacob built a strong legacy in modern Danish politics and made a deep impact on the hundreds of DIS students he taught from 2003 to 2016. We offer this scholarship of up to $10,000 each semester to a deserving DIS Copenhagen or DIS Stockholm student.
The Anders Uhrskov Leadership Scholarship
The Anders Uhrskov Leadership Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship established to award students who have demonstrated leadership on their college campuses at home and who are dedicated to enhancing and building upon their global leadership and critical thinking skills while spending a semester or summer abroad with DIS. We offer this scholarship of up to $10,000 each semester and up to $5,000 each summer to a deserving DIS Copenhagen or DIS Stockholm student.

The Overseas Ambassador Program provides a $500 stipend for students or recent graduates who are planning to study, intern, volunteer or teach abroad. The Overseas Ambassadors will serve as an overseas correspondent, sharing their experiences to motivate other members of the DiversityAbroad.com community to go abroad.

The Émigré Memorial German Internship Program–German State Parliaments (EMGIP) is a fellowship program that provides U.S. and Canadian students with internships at a German state parliament (Landtag)..
Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at accredited U.S. or Canadian colleges and universities before, during and after the program; 18–30 years of age; High to Intermediate German skills (oral & written); Minimum of two years of university level studies in a field related to one of the following: international relations, public administration, political science, law, economics, European studies with emphasis on Germany, German or German studies, with a minor in one of the fields listed; Some relevant work experience (e.g. internship, volunteer work, summer job).
