On Thursday, members of RIT's Board of Trustees attended a poster session where nominees for the Trustees Scholarship Award showcased their work. In addition to trustees, the event was attended by the president, the provost and several deans of RIT colleges. The 2015-2016 award recipients, Professor James Perkins (CHST) and Dr. Denis Cormier (KGCOE), also gave a brief presentation to the board on their work.

On Monday, October 17th, University Studies hosted a new event for the division called “In the Wrong Major? Now what?”. This event was designed to assist current RIT students of any year level who were contemplating a major change.

Dr. Nabil Nasr, associate provost and director of the Golisano Institute for Sustainability,traveled to Germany and China where he led discussions on sustainability and the circular economy at a variety of thought-provoking events. His keynote address, "Sustainable Production and the Circular Economy," was presented at the Congress on Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy, Baden-Württemberg, in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Wendy Hagele-Stapf joined the University Advising Office in October 2016 as a part-time Academic Advisor. Wendy has worked at RIT for 20 years, most recently as an assistant director in the Center for Residence Life.   Wendy brings a wealth of experiences with supporting students and their success.

The 2016 B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences Honors trip to Pittsburgh was a great success! 35 students and 4 chaperones visited three companies (UPMC, Google, Schell Games) and learned a great  deal about what's going on in the tech industry.

Callie Babbitt, associate professor at Golisano Institute for Sustainability has received a $991,925 award from the National Science Foundation to research sustainable solutions for minimizing and managing the growing and complex challenges of food waste generated across the food supply chain. The project, titled “Managing Energy, Water, and Information Flows for Sustainability across the Advanced Food Ecosystem,” will leverage well-established partnerships, working with Wegmans Food Markets Inc.

The National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) held its 51st annual conference in Seattle in October 2016. The RIT Honors Program was represented by assistant program director Kerrie Bondi, Honors Council President Caroline Cameron, and Honors Council Vice President Adam Kaufman.While out on the west cost the Honors Program reconnected with Seattle alumni, who are proud to call themselves part of the RIT Honors Program Community! In response to a growing need, RIT Libraries has created an Academic Integrity website. The site contains a wealth of resources for both faculty and students, including components of a well-crafted syllabus and strategies to help students avoid plagiarism. RIT Libraries, the Writing Commons, and the University Writing Program invite faculty for an academic integrity roundtable discussion on November 9 from 2:00-3:00pm in The Wallace Center (1st floor, Writing Commons).

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT Dubai) has received accreditation for its electrical and mechanical bachelor's engineering programs from the world-renowned ABET, after success in passing international standards and procedures implemented by the commission to ensure high-quality education, curricula, learning outcomes and a high caliber of graduates.   RIT Dubai is the only international university (branch campus) in the UAE to receive ABET accreditation.

Last year, three interior design students conducted an ethnographic study of the Writing Commons where they deconstructed the process of how people work in collaborative and consultancy settings. This study guided the redesign of the Writing Commons, which recently reopened on the first floor of The Wallace Center.

After 39 years of dedicated service to RIT, Chandra (Chan.) McKenzie will be retiring on August 19. A proud RIT Alumna, Chan. began her career at RIT in 1977 as a member of the Wallace Library staff.  She was promoted through a series of appointments to Associate Director of Wallace Library. By 2002 she became the Assistant Provost and Director of RIT Libraries and in 2006 the RIT Libraries received the Excellence in Academic Libraries Award, a national award issued through the American Library Association.

Faculty from the School of Interactive Games and Media in the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences have been working diligently to bring this XSeries to fruition. This XSeries is the first offering from RIT as part of our partnership with edX and fulfills our first year obligations. RIT’s edX advisory council is working to develop policies and procedures for evaluating and approving the development of future edX offerings. More information regarding the edX partnership will be available in fall semester.

Dr. S. Manian Ramkumar (known to many of us as just ‘Ram’) has been named the Interim Dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST). His appointment is effective July 1, 2016 and it follows an internal search process that was anchored by the Interim Dean Selection Advisory committee. I am grateful that there was a terrific pool of candidates who applied for the interim position and for the thoroughness of the committee’s deliberation and analysis.

Dr. Twyla Cummings has been named the next RIT Dean of Graduate Studies. She will begin her appointment August 1, 2016. I was particularly gratified by the pool of candidates and all of the candidates were extremely well qualified. Dr. Cummings is the Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Faculty Research in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences (CIAS) and a professor in the School of Media Sciences.
