Bio
Ellen Granberg, Ph.D., became the first woman to serve as provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs at Rochester Institute of Technology in August 2018.
As the university’s chief academic officer, Granberg oversees nine colleges, two degree-granting units, and international campuses in Croatia, Dubai, Kosovo, and China.
Key initiatives under Granberg’s leadership include: increasing undergraduate student success, expanding doctoral education, improving facilities for instruction and research, and leveraging RIT’s strengths in innovation, creativity, and cross-disciplinary collaboration to advance the academic mission of the university.
Before coming to RIT, Granberg served as the senior associate provost and associate provost for Faculty Affairs at Clemson University. She chaired the development and implementation of the institution’s strategic plan, which spurred growth in research, graduate studies, and inclusive excellence. In addition, Granberg developed a university-wide strategy for faculty recruitment, retention, compensation, and development. She is also a nationally recognized scholar in the sociology of self, identity, and mental health.
Prior to pursuing graduate studies, Granberg spent eleven years in the telecommunications industry. She led large integrated software development teams that replaced aging billing and customer service systems.
Granberg holds a BA in history from the University of California at Davis and an MA and Ph.D. in sociology from Vanderbilt University.

CAD received the 2022 Changing Hearts and Minds Award, sponsored annually by RIT’s Office of the Provost and the Office of Faculty Diversity and Recruitment.

College of Science Dean Sophia Maggelakis to become provost of Wentworth Institute of Technology
Dean Sophia Maggelakis will be leaving RIT to become the senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Wentworth Institute of Technology. Maggelakis joined RIT as an assistant professor in 1990, became head of the School of Mathematical Sciences in 2001, and became dean of the College of Science in 2010.

RIT names LaVerne McQuiller Williams associate provost for Faculty Affairs
LaVerne McQuiller Williams, professor and current interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts, has been named associate provost for Faculty Affairs at the university, effective Sept. 1. In this role, McQuiller Williams will oversee the Office of Faculty Affairs, within the Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.
