HSNA Member and Fortepianist Sylvia Berry performs with Grand Harmonie, March 12-14 (NYC, Cambridge, MA & Concord, NH)

HSNA Member Sylvia Berry

Grand Harmonie and renowed fortepianist Sylvia Berry present three performances of exquisite chamber music settings by Hummel, Devienne, and Mozart

Mixed Media takes listeners on an adventurous exploration of unexpected instrument combinations. In Hummel's Andante and Rondo (realized by Pyle/Roucek/Berry), we envision the composer working out sketches for his concerto for the new and unusual keyed trumpet, accompanied by fortepiano and violin. Devienne’s charming Sonate en Quatuor matches up the flute, viola, horn, and fortepiano for a three-movement frolic through playful musical structures.

Anchoring the program are two works by Mozart: Sonata in D for Violin and Piano, K.7, composed when he was just eight years old, and the monumental Quintet for Piano and Winds in Eb major, K.452, a work Mozart himself described in a 1784 letter as “the best thing that I have written as yet in all my life.” By performing on period instruments, Grand Harmonie’s musicians reveal the mesmerizing possibilities of such unusual sonic forces - just as Mozart, Devienne, and Hummel imagined them.
