July 2016

This month, instead of individuals, we feature a very special event for RIT retirees. The 18th annual RITirees Picnic was held in June. The event welcomed almost 600 retired faculty and staff back to campus for an afternoon that rekindled friendships, collegial relationships and memories of outstanding careers at the university. A gallery of photos from the event can be viewed here.

President emeritus Albert Simone launched the idea of a retirees program to ensure that retired faculty and staff would know that they remain an important part of the extended RIT family. Simone believed it was important for them to understand that the university operates daily on the foundation that past faculty and staff created.

In 1997, a committee of recently retired faculty and staff was formed, led by Dr. Barry Culhane, executive assistant for both President Simone and current President Bill Destler. The committee developed a plan for two signature events: an annual picnic held on campus and a special gathering held around the holidays. The picnic was chosen as the event at which retiree awards would be given to individuals who demonstrate:

  • Meritorious performance in their primary area of expertise
  • Significant activity in community service
  • Contributions to RIT above and beyond the call of duty
  • An outstanding record of student-centered service

“Our awardees are honored as members of the RIT community, introduced by the president and applauded by university colleagues,” said Dr. Culhane. “Many awardees bring family, former colleagues and former students to the event. They’d be happy just to talk to each other, but to have this special award bestowed is icing on the cake. The picnic is clearly one of the most popular annual events on campus for retirees.”

This year, the university honored Fred Bleiler and the late William Larsen. Bleiler, former director of physical education, developed wellness and fitness programs and was instrumental in the design and planning of the Hale-Andrews Student Life Center. Larsen was an associate professor of civil engineering technology and worked on a solar-powered water disinfecting system in Haiti.
