7 Ways to ROC Your July Pride

Are you bummed that June, the official Pride month is over? At Behind the Bricks, we know we sure are. Have no fear, thankfully Rochester hosts nearly all of its Pride events in July. Since Rochester Pride has so many different types of events throughout the month, BTB wanted to break down some of our favorite LGBT+ events leading up the Pride Parade on July 20th.

1. Pride Yoga

We all know life is stressful; gather up your rainbow clothes and head down to Breathe Downtown!  Lay your nerves to rest before Rochester’s major Pride Month activities begin. All the proceeds of this yoga and meditation class go to benefit the Out Alliance for ROC Pride Week. A great relaxing way to celebrate Pride, all while benefiting a great cause.

WHEN IS IT: Friday, July 12th, 2:30-4: 00 pm

WHERE IS IT: Breathe Downtown Annex, 930 East Avenue

WHAT AM I PAYING: A preregister donation of $20 gets you a reserved spot. They will take a donation of any kind the day of, but we highly suggest making sure you get a spot prior! All the money raised will go to the Out Alliance 

WHAT ELSE: A rainbow dress code is highly encouraged. Even if you can’t make it, you can still donate to the cause! Sign up and/or donate here

2. Q-Day at Seabreeze

Looking for a neat way to cool off and hang out with friends celebrating being you? Seabreeze holds an event where everyone can come together as a community for fun, sun, rides, food, and excitement at its Amusement Park. Enjoy a day off and celebrate you all while having a blast riding roller coasters, eating ice cream, and enjoying the sunshine.

WHEN IS IT: Saturday, July 13th, 12:00-6:00 pm

WHERE IS IT: Seabreeze Amusement Park, 4600 Culver Road 

WHAT AM I PAYING: Tickets are $35 and it includes an all-you-can-eat buffet! 

WHAT ELSE: Pre-register here. The deadline for a guaranteed spot is July 12th

3. ROC Pride 5K Run

Love all the food the Pride festivals and events have to offer but want to celebrate your Pride in a healthier way? Rochester puts on a wonderful 5K Pride run and walk through the beautiful city in the Cobbs Hill neighborhood. The race is a USATF Certified 5K course, with Chip timing provided by YellowJacket Racing. Take part in the great tradition of running while celebrating 50 years of the Stonewall Riots.

WHEN IS IT: Sunday, July 14th, 8:30-11:30 am

WHERE IS IT: Cobbs Hill Park, Norris Drive

WHAT AM I PAYING: Tickets are $30

WHAT ELSE: Awards will be given overall and to specific age groups. Post-race snacks will be provided! You can view the course map and register here

4. ROC Pride Stonewall Cookout

In need of a great traditional fun-filled cookout party?  Grab a bite. Dance a little. Enjoy a picnic style party with friends, family, and the Rochester community, in the honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Among all the exciting activities there will be a DJ, a grill, and a drag show.

WHEN IS IT: Sunday, July 14th, 12:00-6:00 pm

WHERE IS IT: Genesee Valley Park, 1000 E River Road 

WHAT AM I PAYING: This is event is free, but make sure to BYOB and any food you would like to cook and share

WHAT ELSE: It’s a family-friendly event, so grab the whole crew and enjoy some good music, entertainment, and of course, the food! You can add the events to your Facebook calendar

5. Celebrate Pride Art DeTOUR℠

If you’re more of a history buff and love learning how the LGBTQ+ community has helped shaped some of the pieces in the Memorial Art Gallery collection, check out the tour hosted by the MAG. This tour uncovers the secret lives and lovers of LGBTQ+ artists in its collection. Discover the meaning of the works and explore all the history surrounding the pieces.

WHEN IS IT: Thursday, July 18, 2019, at 6:00 –7:00 pm 

WHERE IS IT: Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester,  500 University Avenue 

WHAT AM I PAYING: Tickets are $12, including access to all of the museums exhibits that night. Pre-register here

WHAT ELSE: The tour will explore sexual identity and the human desire to belong, along with Europe’s part in Queer Culture. The tour is led by a MAG friend and LGBTQ+ advocate, Bella Clemente

6. ROC Pride Silent Disco

The second annual Pride Silent Disco is taking place at Cobbs Hill Park. Dance the night away with multiple channels of music to dance to. You’re in control with wireless headphones, choosing your desired volume and songs, letting you pick how you ROC out during this Pride event. Grab some friends, get ready to dance, and hype yourselves up for the big parade the next day!

WHEN IS IT: Friday, July 19th, 7:00-10: 00 pm

WHERE IS IT: Cobbs Hill Park, Norris Drive 

WHAT AM I PAYING: Tickets are $20 

WHAT ELSE: Check-in starts at 6:30 pm, so make sure to get there early and get a good spot for you and your friends to jam out. Pre-register here

7. ROC Pride Parade

Now for what you’ve been waiting for: the cream of the crop, the main event! All of these events are leading up to the annual Roc Pride Parade. This year’s theme is, “What is YOUR Stonewall?” When posting your photos on social media, make sure to share a Stonewall moment for you. Break out your rainbow colors and get ready to celebrate your Pride!

WHEN IS IT: Saturday, July 20th, 12:00-2:00 pm

WHERE IS IT: Park Ave, Rochester

WHAT AM I PAYING: nothing! The parade is free for the community. If you want to register to be a participant, check out the pricing and sign up here

WHAT ELSE: There’s a Pre-Parade Party being held at the MAG starting at 10 am. Get there early and start off the celebration right. Afterward, check out the Pride Festival, being held in Cobbs Hill Park
