This year we may not be able to go to parades or parties, but switching it up won't be too hard. Before we get into some fun things you can do over the long weekend, let's remember the significance and meaning of Memorial Day.
Why Do We Celebrate Memorial Day?
Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is a holiday to honor the men and women that died while serving the U.S. Military. Waterloo, New York is the official birthplace of Memorial Day, which actually is less than an hour away from RIT. In Waterloo in 1866, businesses closed and people gathered to place flags and flowers on soldiers graves after the Civil War.
Fun Things You Can Do This Weekend
1. Have a Picnic
No, not with a large group of people. But you can set up a picnic outside in a local park with your family or roommates. Make it more fun by bringing a frisbee or another outdoor game to play!
2. In Rochester? Take a trip to Lake Ontario or the Erie Canal
If you’re still around the Rochester area, take a trip to Lake Ontario or the Erie Canal. These are great places to go for a stroll and enjoy the sunshine.

Many traditional theaters are closed, but a lot of drive-in theaters are beginning to open! Make sure to stay six feet away from others!
7. Give Yourself a History Lesson
Although we all took American History in high school, you may have forgotten some of it. It is important to brush up on our history once in a while!
8. Write Letters to Soldiers
Send ‘thank you’ notes to our troops that are deployed.
9. Surf the Online Sales

10. Bake it Red, White and Blue
A lot of us have been busy baking away during quarantine. If that’s something you like to do, bake something red, white, and blue to be extra festive!
