Evacuation Notices and Emergency Signals


There may be times where the evacuation of a building is necessary, but do you really know what all the different flashing lights, sounds and combinations mean?  

Here is a list of the notifications you could receive when an emergency evacuation is necessary:

  • The sounding of an alarm
  •  RIT Alert notification (text, e-mail, instant message)
  • Alertus notification (beacon or desktop)
  • Verbal Orders
  • Sign-Language or Written Orders

Now that you are aware of the different types of alarms, each alarm combination  has a certain situation linked to it.

Fire – Fire Alarm (with strobes)

Smoke – Fire Alarm (with strobes)

Heat – Fire Alarm (with strobes)

Natural Gas – Verbal order (with signs or hand signals) and text and e-mail messages

Hazardous Material – RIT Alert notification through text and e-mail messages, Alertus and verbal order (with signs or written order)

Bomb Threat – RIT Alert notification through text and e-mail messages, Alertus Notification and verbal order (with signs or written order)

Armed Intruder – RIT Alert notification through text and e-mail messages, Alertus Notification and verbal order (with signs or written order)

Severe Weather – RIT Alert notification through text and e-mail messages, Alertus Notification and verbal order (with signs or written order)

All building occupants need to follow instructions provided and if need be, use the neatrest available marked exit.

In the event of a fire:

Do:

  • Use the stairs
  • Assist others as needed
  • Move away from the building

Do not:

  • Use the elevators
  • Run or scream
  • Re-enter the building unless told it is okay to do so
  • Position yourself near doors or access area while signals are activated

To sign up for RIT Alerts and notifications:

Faculty and Staff - use Oracle

Students - Use SIS

Once in SIS, select the Student Info System link

Log in using your RIT username and password

You will be taken to your Student Center page

Select the Cell/Mobile Phone link

Add or update your cell phone info
