Moving. Everyone loves it, right? It’s totally peaceful and totally not stressful in the slightest. Yeah right. But with RIT move in right around the corner, we thought that we would share our top 5 move in tips to make the process as easy and painless as possible.

1. Look out for the ROC weather

Rochester weather in infamous for its unpredictability. The phrase, “if you don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes” really comes to life when it rains one moment and then the sun starts beaming down on you five minutes later.

So trust us when we say, come prepared for anything. Bring layers, an umbrella, and make sure the way you’re transporting your stuff can handle getting rained on.

2. Coordinate with your roommate

It’s not secret really that college dorms can be very small. Although all freshmen students are assigned a time to move in based on their building and floor number, it’s never a bad idea to be in contact with your roommate(s) about when they are moving in. You could avoid both trying to bring in stuff right at the same time, and you can also probably get some help and roommate bonding time!

3. Bring people to help

This is crucial. Now, we obviously understand that some people are coming from very far away and bringing their whole extended family in just not a possibility. However, the more hands you can have on board with unloading the car and moving boxes into your room, the faster and less painful the process will be!

4. Drink water

You’re very likely going to be doing a lot of walking and stair climbing (bonus tip: try to avoid the elevators as much as possible – those lines will be forever long), and you don’t want to find yourself too busy to remember to drink water and thus leave you dehydrated. Make sure that you and your whole move in team is properly hydrated before the day and also, bring with you a water bottle of sorts, to remind you that even amongst the bustle of move-in day, drinking water in vital (especially if you don’t want anyone to pass out).

5. Read the freshman arrival guide
