About Us

Learn a modern language, and prepare to live and work in a global and multicultural society, both at home and abroad. The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures is committed to preparing students for active participation in a global society, by providing the instruction of highest standard in modern languages and cultures. Our diverse faculty members dynamically engage students in learning languages and cultures through classes and a variety of activities including colloquiums, conversation tables, student-centered cultural activities and clubs, and study abroad programs.

Students can minor or have an immersion in all languages.  Modern language credits earned from colleges overseas during study abroad can be applied towards their minor or immersion. Contact the language coordinators prior to departure for pre-approvals to ensure successful transfer of study abroad credits.

Students with prior instruction of a modern language at another school are to take the placement exam prior to register for a language course at RIT. Contact the language coordinators and arrange the exam date.

All of our courses effectively use media and technology to help students gain valuable communicative skills that are culturally appropriate. A variety of technology-based language resources are available to the students through the Modern Language Technology Center (MLTC).
