In September 1943, the north of Italy is occupied by Germans. Tha Italian army has collapsed, and the soldiers who have escaped to the mountains attempt to establish a resistance. Many civilians do the same and Johnny, an English literature student, is among them. Johnny avoids the communist red partisans and tries to join the azure bands of former regular soldiers, but in both cases he is deluded by the partisans and discovers that the war is less poetic and genuine that he thought. Eventually, the partisans liberate Alba from Germans,  but the city soon falls into German hands again.  Johnny escapes the re-occupation with Ettore and Pierre, but one by one, German soldiers and Italian fascists manage to capture the partisans.  Johnny finds himself alone and isolated, so he finds a way to participate in one last attack on the occupiers.  Ironically, the war will end two months later.
