Community Events

Community Participation in this project!

As part of this project, 726 people attended 3 community dialogue events. 160 participated in interviews, representing 50 zip codes. A large number of participants were urban residents, a population not often thought of when exploring rural agriculture. Respondents shared their personal connections and family traditions in relation to local family farms, such as: picking pumpkins, apples and berries on farms, running through corn mazes with their children, cutting down Christmas trees and frequenting farm stands to purchase produce directly from the farmer. Many people relayed their rich histories and stories of current and previous generations’ connection to agriculture. Elders shared how they grew up on farms, moved from southern states north, away from farming life to urban communities. Others revealed their families were immigrants and made connections to growing food in their home countries and how they brought those traditions to the United States. The participants articulated the tremendous contributions local family farms play in the social fabric, economy, environment and nutrition for the community. Many reported the importance of eating local. Participants communicated concern for the family farms, clearly wanted to support them and value the important contributions they make in the community.
