Graduate Checklist

Congratulations, Tigers! The checklist below will help you prepare for commencement.

 

Before the Big Day

Tickets 

A ticket is required to enter each commencement facility. Graduates will be able to register for one beginning on Monday, May 3 at 10 a.m. Ph.D. candidates and students graduating with a double major can request a ticket for each of their commencement ceremonies. For example, doctoral students can request a ticket to the Ph.D. hooding ceremony and their college commencement ceremony.

Health and Safety Requirements

All graduates must report to Frank Ritter Ice Arena two hours before the start of their ceremony.  At that time, and in compliance with NYS regulations, all graduates must produce a photo ID (e.g. RIT ID, driver’s license, government issued ID) and one of the following:

  • Proof of being fully vaccinated two weeks (14 days) prior to your ceremony
  • Evidence of a negative PCR test administered within 3 days of your ceremony
  • Evidence of a negative rapid antigen test administered within 6 hours of the start of your ceremony
  • Evidence of recovery from a lab-confirmed case of COVID (within the 90 days prior to your ceremony (e.g. proof of a prior positive test result or completed order of isolation)

Graduates will also be required to pass a daily health screen confirming that they do not have any symptoms of COVID-19, were not recently exposed to anyone with COVID-19 and are in compliance with the NYS travel advisory.

Upon satisfying these requirements, graduates will receive the ticket they reserved, which will allow them to be admitted to their commencement ceremony.

Caps and Gowns

Class of 2020 - Bring the cap and gown you received last spring. If you did not order regalia, send your name to graduation@rit.edu.

Class of 2021 - Bring your cap and gown to your college ceremony.

Diploma Case 

Class of 2020 - Please remember to bring your diploma case to the ceremony for your graduation photos. 

Updated Address and Contact Info

Update your address and contact information in SIS. Make sure everything is sent to the right place after graduation. You can also enter a special address for your diploma mailing as well as your diploma name, if it is different than your legal name. 

Tell your family

Share the names, dates and times of your college commencement ceremony with your family and friends.

During Commencement Weekend

Line-up for Commencement Ceremonies

  • After completing your health and safety check, go to the facility where your college ceremony is being held and check in with your college staff.   
  • Allow extra time to find a parking space or check the RIT bus schedules so you can arrive on time.
  • Know the time and location of line up for your college ceremony.

What do I do during the ceremony?

  • Follow the instructions of your college staff. For all Class of 2021 ceremonies, except College of Engineering Technology, your diploma cover will be on your chair. Bring that cover with you when you cross the stage. College of Engineering Technology graduates, follow the instructions of your college staff.
  • For the Class of 2020 ceremonies, bring your diploma cover that was mailed to you last fall and carry it with you when you cross the stage.

Safety and Security

ALL persons, guests and graduates, entering the ceremony locations will be subject to security screening including metal detection gates and inspection of all bags. To expedite the screening process, be aware that all objects made of metal must be removed from pockets (though not bags) and placed in a bin for inspection. If possible, avoid bringing metal objects to ceremonies. No bags or backpacks will be permitted. Only small purses will be allowed in.  

Wear appropriate clothing and shoes – remember you will be doing a fair amount of walking.  Caps and gowns are required for your college ceremony.

Line up locations are not secure. Do not plan to leave valuables, purses, cell phones, etc. in any line up location. During ceremonies, do not leave personal items on your chair when you go on stage. You may not be returning to the same seat. Note: You cannot bring a bag or small backpack with you into the commencement facilities. However, you can bring an empty water to fill at the water fountain. 

Parking and Shuttle Service

  • Shuttles will run on normal schedule and at current reduced COVID-19 capacity. If buses are full, they will not stop. Please plan accordingly to get to your ceremony location in time for lineup. RIT shuttles can be tracked in real time via the TransLoc Rider app. 
  • The shuttles will run a normal weekday schedule for both Friday as well as Saturday. There will be temporary shuttle stops at D lot and Andrews as well as U lot and Andrews.  
  • General Parking available in the following lots: D, E, F, G, H, N, S, U.  Please move your vehicles from D and U Lots following your ceremony to make room for the next round of graduates.
  • Handicap parking will be available in D Lot and behind GPC for qualified individuals. Please stop at the Welcome Center booth to get access to the D Lot handicap parking.

Photos, Digital Downloads, and Rings

Photographs - GradImages is the official photographer for Commencement. Pre-register with GradImages by visiting GradImages.com/Preregistration.  You may register your email and up to 6 emails of loved ones who would like to view and order photos. Your proofs will be ready to view online within 48 hours of the ceremony. In order to notify you when your images are available, GradImages sends emails and paper proofs by mail, along with optional text message notifications. Your information is never shared, and privacy is guaranteed. Preregistering is simply a way to make sure your contact information is up to date with GradImages and ensures your complimentary proofs are delivered as quickly as possible. Although there's never any obligation to order, you will receive a coupon for $5 off any order of $25 or more for your participation. Photos may be ordered online, by phone, or by mail. Digital Downloads of College Ceremonies - If you cannot watch the live stream or would like to keep the memory of your commencement ceremony, a digital download of your ceremony will be available on in June. The download will be available on this website free of charge.

After Commencement

Update Your Contact Information

Remember to update your contact information with the Alumni Association to make sure you receive information about the benefits you receive as an alum, invitations to events in a city near you, volunteer opportunities, and exclusive deals and access. Update your information here

Diploma Distribution

Approximately 10 weeks after commencement, graduates will receive their diploma in the mail from the Registrar’s Office. Please be sure your mailing information is correct in the Student Information System (SIS). If needed, you can set up a special diploma mailing address. Visit this page to contact the Registrar.
