"I always wanted to do research and learn new things. Being a McNAIR and LSAMP student I was able to accomplish my goals. This program helped me to grow and succeed not only in research but in my classes as well. It allowed me to gain hands on experience for working in Lab. Faculty and staff in program are very helpful and caring.”
Being the first in my family to attend college continues to be difficult, adapting to a different environment has been challenging. However, being a part of CSTEP has given me the support needed to help me succeed in college. CSTEP has given me a limitless number of opportunities to communicate with high school students about programs like CSTEP and all the amazing things they have to offer. CSTEP has provided financial funding and guidance that has allowed me to successfully finish off my second year and for that I cannot be more thankful.
I have always wanted to do research, it was the CSTEP program that made my dream come true. Along with my academic career, I could get research experience and communicate with professors and scientists solving real world problems. This not only gave me exposure in the scientific community but it also enhanced my confidence.
I have been involved in undergraduate research through CSTEP since 2014 from Monroe Community College to RIT. The CSTEP program advisors and staff have played a significant role in my success. As a first generation college student the CSTEP program has been extremely beneficial, it made the path towards education and research possible.
Being in CSTEP has meant having access to tutors I did not have to pay out of pocket for. Being in CSTEP has meant having a comfortable place to talk about graduate school. Being part of CSTEP has provided a sense of community for me within RIT. I have been able to meet other students in a more intimate setting. I feel fortunate to have been able to be a part of the program.
CSTEP made me a part of a greater community on campus, one that could support me academically and socially. The program design also allows students who don't have a lot of free time to still feel included despite not all of the events.
One thing that often gets overlooked is the cost and necessity of text books. Whether it's required simply for homework questions or if it contributes to the class its easy to forget how much this costs each term, so the textbook fund was beneficial. Additionally research funds allow students to get paid to do research they enjoy during classes. This is great as students can work on research skills and further their career instead of working in food service or elsewhere on campus. CSTEP also provides a warm and comfortable place to hang out and work near the center of campus. Finally, CSTEP has also provided me with travel support for attending conferences and presenting my research.
Thanks for all of your hard work Jenn! You have done a fantastic job running the program and I look at CSTEP as a model for any sort outreach or diversity based program I may be involved in, in the future. It has been a great 6 years at RIT and CSTEP is something i'll always remember.
