Welcome Guide
Please be sure to review the 2021 Welcome Guide with your student. This guide will help you support your student through the summer, and is where you can find:
- Action items that your student must complete this summer
- Helpful resources and information
- Information on how we will connect with you and your student
RIT Student Email Accounts
Important information will be sent to students’ RIT accounts beginning at the time of their deposit—please remind your student to start checking this account on a regular basis.
It can be tempting to log in to your student's account to make sure they are completing checklist items, but we encourage you to allow your student to take on this responsibility themselves, as they will have to manage their own schedules and accounts when they arrive at RIT.
Academic Checklist
Your student will soon receive an email with an Academic Checklist—things to be completed in June. This includes:
- Request an official final high school or college transcript and send to the RIT Admissions Office
- Request official AP, IB, or college credit(s) to be sent to RIT
- Take the Math Placement Exam (required for all students except Bachelor of Fine Arts in the College of Art and Design)
- Take the Language Placement Exam if planning to take a language course
Know Your Student’s College
Students are often more likely to know their major than their college, but it’s important to know which college they are entering, especially during Orientation. Check out the Programs of Study website to match your student’s major with their college. It isn’t always as obvious as you’d think! For example, the engineering technology major is not in the college of engineering.
Student Class Schedules
In mid-July, academic departments register all incoming students for fall term classes. Students will be able to access their preliminary schedules by August 1 by logging into the Student Information System (SIS). Schedules will be adjusted as official Advanced Placement (AP) scores, official college transcripts, and RIT placement test scores are received.
If your student has a question about their schedule, they can reach out to their academic advisor when schedules are released. They can find the name and contact information of their advisor in SIS.
Immunizations
Students must complete all required health documents located online at wellnessportal.rit.edu. These include your student’s immunization record, health history, tuberculosis screening, treatment authorization, insurance plan, and proof of COVID-19 vaccination. If you haven’t already, make sure your student is up-to-date on immunizations and has submitted their completed forms to the Student Health Center prior to arrival in August. For more information, visit the Student Health Center website.
If your student has not begun the COVID-19 vaccination process, remind them to schedule an appointment immediately, as the length of time between shots will vary for two-dose vaccine series. Learn more about the COVID-19 Vaccine requirement
