Water. You need more of it.
Make water your college best friend!

Water won’t drain your bank account, make you jealous, or ruin your night. In fact, drinking water only provides positive outcomes, making it the perfect addition to your life. Savanna Shoemaker, MS, RDN, LD provided us with some simple ways to drink more water. You can up your water intake by:

  • Keeping a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day.
  • Setting reminders on your phone to drink more water.
  • Make it a goal to drink a big glass of water before every meal.
  • Flavor your water. Fresh fruit is the best option but you can also use powdered/liquid water enhancers.
  • Make drinking a glass of water the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do before bed.

Water helps your body digest food, get rid of waste, regulate your body temperature, prevent dehydration, and so much more. Use these helpful tips to drink more water and therefore optimize your health!

Each week, we are sharing a financial wellness tip to help you make the connection between financial management decisions, your overall wellness, and student success. Money touches every aspect of our lives, and a lack of financial literacy can cause unnecessary stress and negatively impact our mental and physical health.

Banking
As an RIT student, you may have a need for banking services including use of an ATM machine or physical branch location. If you are a student employed on- or off-campus, your employer may highly encourage direct deposit of your paycheck. Not all banking customers utilize traditional brick-and-mortar institutions, often opting for online banks instead.

Here are some of the pros and cons of each type of banking institution to help you determine which may be best for you:

Brick-and-Mortar Banks

Pros:

  • Convenient
  • Personal service and support
  • Access to a large ATM network
  • Wide variety of products and services
  • Online/mobile banking available
  • Accept cash deposits

Cons:

  • Charge higher fees
  • Loans and other products cost more
  • Lower-yield interest on savings accounts
  • Time consuming

Online Banks

Pros:

  • Lower or no fees on products
  • Higher-yield interest on savings accounts
  • Online banking is a big time-saver
  • Safe websites that are easy to use

Cons:

  • Virtual and impersonal customer service
  • Small or non-existent ATM networks (likely ATM fees)
  • Often no cash deposits
  • Need for reliable internet connection

At RIT, students have a variety of ATMs available on campus including Bank of America, M & T, and Advantage Federal Credit Union. Located on the physical campus is an Advantage Federal Credit Union branch in Global Village, and within a few mile radius of RIT in Henrietta, there are KeyBank, Bank of America, Citizens Bank, M & T, Chase, ESL Federal Credit Union, and Summit Federal Credit Union branches.

There’s no rule dictating you must choose between a brick-and-mortar bank and an online bank - choose the bank that's best for you!
