Tiger Athletics Report

December 2021

Welcome to the fourth edition of “Tiger Athletics Report” – your glimpse into the RIT Intercollegiate Athletics Department each month throughout the academic year. We look forward to bringing you the inside scoop from our 24 teams while highlighting the accomplishments of our Tiger family on the field of competition and beyond!

From the Desk of Jeff Siegel - Associate Director of Athletics

As 2021 ends, now is a great time to reflect on the past 12 months.  So much has changed in my role over this period. Thinking back to January and developing a process to test over 10,000 students a week for COVID-19, was an amazing and rewarding challenge all in one.  As the months progressed and we started opening back up, we were lucky enough to see some amazing things happen, including the Men's Lacrosse National Championship.  Another highlight was just this past Month; RIT was selected to host an NCAA Volleyball regional championship.  Serving as the Tournament Director for the eight-team tournament was a fantastic experience and leaves me looking forward to hosting again.

In my role in athletics, I get to be extremely involved in the day-to-day operations of the department and have my hands in many different areas - no two days are ever the same!  I oversee our home-event management, supervise multiple head coaches and their program, along with scheduling and overall management for outdoor facilities. I also coordinate the transportation for all our programs, and serve as the advisor to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).  I am proud how we have faced each many unique challengesthis past year, and nothing more rewarding than working every day with and for our student athletes.

Our student athletes are an amazing group, in particular our SAAC, which is a Representative Student Organization on campus. In the month of September they were honored in September as the RSO of the month for all their hard work, in with their focus on mental health.  Beginning this academic year, the group hosts monthly “Mental Health Days” which offers activities for students to take a break from their academic and athletic rigors. The group hosted a “Pizza and Paint” day, a “Pumpkin Smash”, “Coffee and Cats” and our annual “Finals Fuel-Up.”  Be on the lookout for some great events in store for the spring semester!  Follow @tigersaac on Instagram for all the latest information!

On behalf of the entire athletic department, I wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season and look forward to an even better 2022. Go Tigers!

A Message From Men's Hockey Coach Wayne Wilson

As we wrap up the first half of our season, we are excited about our accomplishments and look forward to a tough second half as we try to capture another Atlantic Hockey Association Championship.

We beat a very tough St Lawrence team at Blue Cross Arena in front of over 7,000 fans during Brick City Weekend beofre beating nationally ranked Notre Dame on the road on national television. We swept Princeton in a pair of road games over Thanksgiving break.

We start the second semester with two home games against Arizona State (Jan. 14-15) to finish up our non-conference schedule. Entering the new year we sit fourth in the Atlantic Hockey stnadingins with an overall record of 9-7-2.

We have numerous players doing extremely well led by our captains Will Calverely, Dan Willett, Kobe Walker, Nick Bruce and Andrew Petrucci. Our younger players are getting acclimated to being Division I student athletes. Carter Wilkie has received numerous Rookie of the Week and Rookie of the Month awards, while Tommy Scarfone picked up a shut-out win at Princeton in only his third start in goal.

As we head into the break, we look forward to the challenges ahead. On behalf of our staff and players we wish everyone a healthy, safe and Happy Holidays with family and friends.

GO TIGERS!

RIT Women's Hockey builsing "Brick-by-Brick"

Greetings from RIT Women’s Ice Hockey!

With the first half of our season in the books, we had a semester to learn and grow. With over half time team comprised with 13 new student-athletes, we quickly on-boarded everyone and jumped right into a tough schedule, not looking back!

Our program motto this season is ‘Brick-by-Brick.’ Our student-athletes and staff recognize the journey it will be to rebuild our program, and are currently setting our foundation. This semester, bricks have been added. We faced multiple top-10 programs, and saw how they approach the game at the highest level.

We battled for 60 minutes in games to put us in competitive situations, learning the importance of resetting and having resilience with every shift. We have lost close games in the last few shifts, showing us first-hand how vital every shift is.

Choosing to have a mindset that these experiences are bricks in building our program is a large task we ask of our student-athletes. We are proud of our their growth this semester. We are proud of their daily push to leave the program better than they found it, and believe in RIT as a university and hockey program. The second semester will be here before we know it! We will approach this semester the same way.

 Brick-by-Brick

We will continue to build on these bricks, adding more and more until our Hockey Brick City is built within THE Brick City. We hope you will build with us along this journey.

Sending optimistic holiday and winter vibes to all our past, present and future Tigers.

Always bleeding orange!

Celeste Brown, Bruce B. Bates Head Women’s Ice Hockey Coach
