Mindful Eating for the Holidays

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season. As we gather around the table, we are often surrounded by those closest to us – and a lot of decadent food.

We asked Kelly Read, Registered Dietitian in the Student Health Center, to share her top tips on mindful eating over the holidays to help keep you feeling your best during the break.

  • Avoid skipping meals. For holidays like Thanksgiving, we tend to skip meals to appreciate the tasty meal later. However, if you skip breakfast and/or lunch, you may feel ravenous causing you to eat quickly and possibly overeat, rather than savoring the tasty meal.

  • Slow down when you eat. When you eat fast, you usually eat past fullness. This is because your body does not have enough time to register that it is full. So, make sure to grab a seat, put your utensil down in between bites, and enjoy what you are eating. Think about the flavors, textures, and colors of the food you are eating!

  • Balance your plate. Of course, allow yourself to get the delicious foods you were looking forward to eating (pumpkin pie anyone?), but also grab some colorful veggies or fruit, too! We can all use some extra vitamins and minerals during the holiday season.

Keep these tips in mind for your next celebration to help pace yourself and feel present this holiday season!

Party PAWS: Party Goer/Thrower Checklist

Are you considering going to a party over Thanksgiving Break, or maybe having a few friends over? Check out the Party Goer/Thrower checklists to make sure you keep yourself and everyone around you safe!

Party Goer Tips:

  • Before drinking, plan how you’ll get to and from the party.
  • Slow down and wait at least 20 minutes in between alcoholic beverages - if you decide to drink.
  • Stay with the same group of friends throughout the night.

Party Thrower Tips:

  • Have food and non-alcoholic drinks available! Drinking on an empty stomach is never a good idea.
  • Don't hesitate to call Public Safety or 911 if things get out of hand.
  • Give your neighbors a heads-up before throwing the party.

Each week, we are sharing a financial wellness tip to help you make the connection between financial management decisions, your overall wellness, and student success. Money touches every aspect of our lives, and a lack of financial literacy can cause unnecessary stress and negatively impact one’s mental and physical health.

Spending During the Holidays - Don't Break The Bank

It can be easy to overspend both online and in-person during the busy holiday season. That's why it is so important to have a plan before starting your holiday shopping.

Make a list of who you want to get gifts for, then do a little brainstorming of creative ways to gift this season. For example, give the gift of your time by helping grandma or another elderly relative with their weekly shopping. Or, give the gift of creativity by making your roommate a playlist for their drive home over break. There are numerous low/no cost gift ideas to consider.

Of course there will be those that you want to purchase a gift for – so stick to your budget and keep track of everything you buy so you don’t overspend. You don’t want to create debt for yourself in the New Year, and you will really be able to enjoy the gifts you give this holiday season!

Be sure to follow the Financial Literacy team on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram for more financial tips throughout the semester!
