COVID-19 Booster Vaccine

Earlier this month, the university announced the COVID-19 booster vaccine is required for RIT students, faculty, and staff by Monday, January 31, or within 14 days of becoming eligible for the booster vaccine.

The on-campus COVID-19 Booster Vaccine Clinics are filling up quickly, and the Student Health Center is working to add more dates and times for our RIT community. If you are able to travel off-campus, vaccination site resources are available to help you locate COVID-19 vaccine options in the area.

Eat Mindfully

When you are eating a meal, are you watching TV or playing a video game?  Are you stopping at a drive thru on the way home from school?  Are you eating snacks right out of the bag?

If you answered yes to these questions, you may not be eating mindfully.

Mindful eating involves focusing on the food you are eating and making food choices based on hunger and satiety cues. Noticing the shape, texture, smell, and taste of food is another aspect of mindful eating. Your body naturally knows what food it wants and how much food it needs to maintain health. Eating mindfully is correlated with a better relationship with food, improved digestion by listening to your body, maintaining a healthy body weight for you, and feeling better overall.

To start eating mindfully, remove distractions while you are eating. Try focusing on the food you are eating, the people you are with, and the way the food makes you feel. Think about “Am I hungry right now or am I just bored and stressed?”  “Is this the food my body wants right now?”

Each week, we are sharing a financial wellness tip to help you make the connection between financial management decisions, your overall wellness, and student success. Money touches every aspect of our lives, and a lack of financial literacy can cause unnecessary stress and negatively impact our mental and physical health.

A Financial Scam to Avoid: Rent-to-Own

There are certain companies in the world that will advertise rent-to-own items – such as furniture, electronics, and other household items as “Get it TODAY and Pay $19.99 for 52 months.” However, these tend to be predatory-type advertisements and offers. Aside from the taxes, fees, and other items that are often included in these types of transactions, the total cost of these items after 52 payments will often end up costing significantly more money than buying it outright.

These types of companies and ad campaigns often target those with low or non-existent credit because the instant gratification of obtaining an item with the slow payment over time is attractive. However, it can end up being costly.

The alternative to these types of predatory practices is a three-step process: 1) create a budget; 2) set your financial goals; and 3) plan for your large purchases. Planning and responsible consumption of consumer goods are strategic blueprint for financial wellness. Be cautious and inquisitive, protect yourself, and if it sounds too good to be true – it probably is!
