      Advanced Care Directives

What is an advanced care directive? An advance directive is a written document that tells your health care providers who should speak for you and what medical decisions they should make if you become unable to speak for yourself. This information is important if you become unconscious or otherwise too sick to make your wishes known.

Why is this important for a college student? It is power that all are entitled to have. No one knows when or if illness might happen in the future; you can be young or old. With the Advance Directive for Health Care, your health care choices and desires can be honored.

What are some Components of the Advance Care Directive?

      • Health Care Surrogate; who will make your decisions when you can’t
      • Desired/undesired medical treatments
      • Scope of physical comfort
      • Life Sustaining treatments or not
      • Organ donations

Where can I find more information on Advance Care Directives? Information on Advance Care Directives can be found in the Document and Forms page on the RIT Student Health Center website.

Focus on Your Food and Feel Better!

According to Harvard Health, mindful eating involves focusing on the food you are eating and making food choices based on hunger and satiety cues. Your body naturally knows what food it wants and how much food it needs to maintain health. Eating mindfully is correlated with a better relationship with food, improved digestion, maintaining a healthy body weight, and feeling better overall.

      To start eating mindfully:

      • Remove distractions while you are eating

      • Focus on the food you are eating, and the way the food makes you feel

      • Ask yourself, “Am I hungry right now or am I just bored and stressed?”

Each week, we are sharing a financial wellness tip to help you make the connection between financial management decisions, your overall wellness, and student success. Money touches every aspect of our lives, and a lack of financial literacy can cause unnecessary stress and negatively impact our mental and physical health.

Financial Considerations when Comparing Job Offers:

Salary isn’t the only thing to consider when comparing job offers. It is important to look at the total compensation package – both direct pay (base salary) and indirect pay (benefits and perks). Typically all employees are offered some benefits (they may differ by job category) but perks may vary and/or be discretionary. Over time, these benefits and perks can add up and may outweigh the actual salary offer.

      Benefits you should consider:

      • Amount of vacation time being offered
      • Annual merit increases
      • Bonuses
      • Cost of health care coverage
      • Retirement savings programs
      • Paid leave
      • Insurance
      • Educational benefits.

Learn more about what comes after the job offer at the next Money Mondays series on March 21, “Some Things Shouldn’t Be Left Up to Luck”. The Career Services and Co-op Office will discuss the key elements of a job offer, strategies for evaluating multiple offers, and how to negotiate your salary requirements. Check out the Financial Literacy website as well, or follow the team on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
