New Media Design BFA

Program Overview

The new media design meets the growing demand for college graduates with strong visual design and technical knowledge to create the interactive user experiences for mobile apps, entertainment, gaming, digital products, education, and technology industries. New media design is at the intersection of visual communication, design strategy, technology sciences, and user experience design. With changing digital devices from mobile, VR to large scale projections stretching the forms of communication and interactivity, new media designers are poised to become the innovative thinkers, designers, and creators of the next generation of digital media. This inter-disciplinary program teaches the creative student the required design, 3D, motion and technologies required to create dynamic and cutting-edge interactive projects.

Cooperative Education & Experiential Education Component

  • Cooperative education is an option for students in the new media design degree. Students are typically available summer term; a number may also be available spring term.
  • Internship for credit is also an option in the program.

Equipment & Facilities

Extensive laboratory facilities (15 labs with over $40 million in up-to-date equipment). Labs are state-of-the-art, featuring the latest software packages used by the design and interactive industry for development across desktop computer, mobile and tablets. Dedicated New Media Workshop with VR, wearable, mobile and large screen devices, 3D printers, projection systems and tangible computing kits and resources.  
Software: Adobe Master Collection, Maxon Cinema 4D, Processing, Apple Xcode with additional design and development applications and frameworks as needed.
Programming and Languages: HTML 5, CSS3, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, C#
 

Nature of Work

Interaction Design blends interdisciplinary components, including graphic design, human-computer interaction, and information architecture, with technology to deliver a range of professional and experimental user experiences to the screen.

Training / Qualifications

Most artists and designers often need at least a bachelor of science degree in a related field and definitely a strong portfolio of work.

Job Outlook

There is a growing demand for interactive professionals as the work they produce is often a high priority for leading businesses these days. People who are multi-talented with a strong design background coupled with technical capabilities are attractive candidates.
