Master of Science in Business

Program Overview

The Master of Science (MS) degree programs provide students with options that allow them to specialize in a specific business discipline, as opposed Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs that are designed to offer a broad base of all business disciplines. Saunders MS degrees are typically better suited for students that are focused on a specific area of business, looking to advance in their career, or for making a targeted career change. MS programs vary in length from nine to 17 months, allowing many MS students to complete their program in less than a year.  Part-time options exist allowing students to complete degrees in as little as 18 months.

Cooperative Education & Experiential Education Component

  • An optional cooperative education experience at the graduate level in addition to professional skills workshops further develop the interpersonal skills and career objectives of students.
  • Cooperative education is a tradition at RIT, and the MS programs provide opportunities for students to enrich terms spent in class with terms spent at full-time work. Co-op students are able to work 3-6 months.

Student Skills & Capabilities

MS courses are aligned with the values of RIT and the skills that employers demand. MS programs consist of 10 to 12 course where core courses provide students with a solid foundation in their specialized business discipline. Each degree includes required electives that allow students a deeper understanding and focus within more specialized areas, allowing them to develop skills and exposure that match their interests and enhance their expertise. Many of the MS programs also offer free electives for students to creatively complement their coursework with graduate courses offered across all nine RIT colleges which helps position themselves in distinctively powerful ways throughout their careers. Options such as Computational Finance and Supply Chain Management also leverage RIT expertise by delivering core courses and electives with RIT programs such as Mathematical Sciences and Engineering. Also, international students receiving the MS in Computational Finance degree qualify to apply for a 17-month work extension to their OPT (Optional Practical Training) period. This extension means that students could be eligible for up to two and a half years of work in the United States.

Saunders College of Business at RIT moved up 18 spots to #73 in the U.S. News & World Report 2019 edition of Best Graduate School Rankings among graduate business schools in America. Additionally, TFE (The Financial Engineer) Times ranked Saunders College in seven categories for 2018 Top Graduate Schools and Programs, including #48 Best MS in Accounting, #23 Best MS in Finance, #29 Best MS in Financial Engineering, and #15 Best MS in Management Programs. In 2017, Saunders College was awarded three palms of excellence by Eduniversal, which recognizes “excellent business schools with reinforcing international influence.” Additional recognition by Eduniversal for Best Masters Programs include #34 for MS in Finance, #28 for MS in Management, #34 for MS in Entrepreneurship and Innovative Ventures, and #42 for MS in Computational Finance.

Equipment & Facilities

The Sklarsky Center for Business Analytics features the latest technology and equipment, including Bloomberg Terminals and the most advanced analytics software. The REDCOM Active Learning Lab provides the business environment that maximizes the utilization of technology for digital interaction and team networking. Computer labs currently have 60 PC’s hooked up to a network server, including wireless connectivity.

Training / Qualifications

MS program curricula provide flexibility in allowing students to choose between several business discipline specialties, allowing for degree-specific and free electives for students to customize their degrees in ways that are unique to their interests. A sampling of core courses and featured offerings for each degree option include:
