Bio

Dr. Anju Gupta received her B.E. from University of Mumbai, India, her M.S. from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and her Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island--all in Chemical Engineering. Her research at the University of Rhode Island focused on the fundamental understanding of interactions of drug delivery moieties with model cell membranes. Dr. Gupta held a tenure-track joint appointment in the Departments of Chemistry and Engineering at Texas A&M International University, Laredo, Texas. There, she received a National Science Foundation grant to design novel peptides inspired from spider-silk, and was a co-PI on grants to study peer-assessment based learning and to develop a chemical engineering-based workshop for pre-service high school teachers. Dr. Gupta also held the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology before joining the Chemical Engineering department at Rochester Institute of Technology as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Gupta has presented her work at several conferences including the American Institute for Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the American Chemical Society (ACS), and the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GOMRI) annual meetings. She has served as session chair and co-chair at the AIChE and ACS meetings, and is currently the programming chair for Young Professional Committee at AIChE.

Research Areas

Dr. Gupta’s research interests include self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules, oil/water emulsions stabilized by surfactants and nanoparticles, and surface modification of nanoscale materials for environmental applications and chemical/biological applications. Her technical expertise includes thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis), cryogenic electron microscopy (scanning and transmission), size analysis, and zeta potential measurements. Her current research focuses on the design of stabilized bio-based emulsions that incorporate nanoparticle and lipids and the modification of non-ionic polysaccharides for environmental applications.
