Mechanical Engineering Technology
My college experience is one that I would not change even if I had the chance to. The co-op program has demonstrated many times to be a crucial role in the success of CAST students. The four and a half years I have spent at RIT so far have given me many friends, and many more experiences that I will carry on with me and cherish whether it be in memories or in knowledge that I can use later on in life. Everyone in the MMET department is always courteous and makes an effort to ensure their presence and personality will never be forgotten. Advisors, professors, and other faculty, staff, and students in the department are always there if you need someone to turn for advice or other help. They have been the best support system I could have asked for. CAST takes a very unique approach to their education. All of the friends I have in engineering programs at other schools do not seem to get the same hands-on experience that a CAST student does. This hands-on experience is pertinent to the success of an engineer. Not only is there a large amount of hands-on work, but the faculty bring decades upon decades of real-world experience to the classroom. Classes are not just about the theory of how something works. Professors bring real-world examples that they have encountered in industry, whether it be a design or failure of a system, and turn it to the students to design or analyze for cause of failure. With nothing but knowledge of the theory behind something, there is a severe lack of knowledge of how mechanical or fluid systems actually work. The MMET department takes pride in the equipment and software that is used in the labs because it directly relates to the real world. Equipment is not purchased just because it is state of the art. The equipment that is purchased is, if not the same, very similar to the equipment used in industry. This all makes the transition from school to the working world much smoother, and directly relates to the success that is carried along with the RIT Mechanical Engineering Technology title.
