About the “Conversations” Series:
“How’d they get there? Conversations with COS and CHST Alumni” are casual, 45-minute Zoom talks with alumni from RIT’s College of Science and College of Health Sciences and Technology. Degrees from RIT can open doors to exciting graduate, doctoral, and professional work all over the world. Join “Conversations” to find out how these alumni got from RIT to where they are today – and how you might be able to follow in those footsteps.

Speaker Bio:
David Orwig is a Senior Forest Ecologist at Harvard University’s Harvard Forest and is also Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts. His expertise includes invasive pest and pathogen impacts, Old-growth forest dynamics, tree-ring studies, and land use and conservation engagement. He has authored many scientific papers and outreach products that deal with how forests are impacted by disturbance, invasive insects and the associated management response to them. He has extensive experience in studying old-growth forests contained in the Massachusetts DCR-designated reserves, including Mt. Greylock, Mohawk Trail State Forest and Wachusett Mountain State Reservation, and helped contribute to the original Old-growth policy and management plan at Wachusett Mountain. He is a contributing author to the Wildlands and Woodlands conservation initiative, which aims at permanently protecting 70% of New England’s landscape as forest. Dr. Orwig holds a B.S. degree in Biology from the Rochester Institute of Technology and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ecology and Forest Resources, respectively, from Penn State University.
