Abstract:
Micro-optics enables small form factors, high resolution, and advanced optical functionality. The conventional fabrication approaches rely on opto-mechanical and chemical multi-step processes. While effective, sequential processing can accumulate form errors and the use of chemicals raises environmental concerns. We establish a methodology and develop a process for direct fabrication of micro-optics using femtosecond laser figuring and finishing. The interaction mechanisms and impact of laser wavelength, pulse duration, and focusing conditions were investigated. The fabricated micro-optics, including convex microlenses, microlens arrays, and scattering optics for surrogate laser beacon objects, were demonstrated. These demonstrations establish femtosecond laser figuring and finishing as a direct, non-contact, precise, and environmentally sustainable solution for micro-optics fabrication.
