Italian Traditional Dance Workshop
Kate Causbie will lead a traditional Italian folk dance workshop open to all RIT students. She is a teacher who spends half the year in Southern Italy, in Puglia that her great grandparents came from, in pursuit of living music and dance traditions. She works to build bridges between these living roots and diaspora communities, centering living local lineage and resisting commercialization or performance narratives — instead seeking older ways of creating together, in complex community.
The workshop will be focused on encountering the diversity of rhythm across Southern Italy, where dances are held as part of living traditions that carry identity and shared meaning. Deconstructing the idea of a singular or stereotypical “tarantella" and "pizzica" we'll tune our ear to the qualities of different rhythm families to learn the dynamics and codes of dances from cultures in Puglia, Campania, and Calabria.
Kate is an Arts & culture educator and writer with a passion for photography, Southern Italian culture, dance, and embodied oral traditions. She spends most of her time teaching photography to middle and high schoolers, supporting their discovery of creative process. The rest of the time she spends traveling in Southern Italy, learning and seeking.
