Deaf Villains in Hollywood Films and TV Productions
This lecture explores the representation of Deaf people as
antagonists/villains in Hollywood films and TV productions. Primary
questions for discussion will be: Are most deaf villains represented in a
realistic manner or are they stereotypes? How does deafness play an
advantage or a disadvantage in their roles? Are they leaders or followers
if they are in a group of villains? What are the motivations behind their
criminal activities?

Ben Jarashow holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Gallaudet
University. His master’s thesis focused on developing criteria for a
better quality of ABC storytelling. He teaches in the University of South
Florida’s ASL program, and lives in Rochester, New York, with his
family.
