Abstract Details: Schools around the
country grapple with policies, practices, and beliefs that perpetuate
educational inequities. Research has shown that educators enter the
classroom with good intentions yet lack sufficient preparation for
disrupting and redressing the historical inequities entrenched in
communities and schools. Inclusive teaching requires more than good
intentions; it is an ongoing commitment to learning and making equitable
and inclusive changes to pedagogical practices and curriculum to support
all students. In this talk, I will discuss how my research contributes to
ongoing efforts to provide effective professional learning for educators
that centers social justice, inclusive teaching, and antiracist pedagogy.
Specifically, I will present findings from my work that explore the
important role of faculty learning communities in advancing equitable and
inclusive practices in STEM education.
Bio: Dr. Diane Codding (she/her) is a Postdoctoral Scholar at Northwestern University. Her research addresses issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice in K-12 and higher education, with a specific focus on STEM education, antiracist praxis, and culturally sustaining pedagogy. She earned her Ph.D. in Education from the University of Delaware, where she specialized in sociocultural and community-based approaches in education.
