Title: Protecting Our Futures: Challenges & Strategies for Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

Abstract: Women’s, gender, and sexuality studies (WGSS) programs are experiencing heightened political pressure amid national efforts to restrict discourse on race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. In response to direct threats emerging in 2022, the National Women’s Studies Association convened a working group to assess the conditions facing WGSS departments. The group developed a national survey examining departmental structure, budgets, faculty lines, staffing, enrollment, and perceived institutional support, supplemented with data on anti DEI legislation and institutional characteristics from IPEDS. Findings reveal uneven support, emerging vulnerabilities, and notable enrollment trends across four year institutions. While limited by survey depth, the report offers foundational insight into the current climate for WGSS and identifies critical areas for further qualitative and quantitative research.
