Every year RIT’s chapter of Pi Kappa Phi (ΠΚΦ) hosts an annual fundraiser for The Ability Experience, to support people with disabilities by raising money and spreading awareness. Fraternity brothers cycle for 100 consecutive hours to raise donations and enhance the quality of life of disabled people. The Ability Experience was started by ΠΚΦ in 1977, and was originally called Push America. ΠΚΦ at RIT started The Pedal Experience about six years ago to make an interesting and eye-catching fundraiser.
The official mission of Pi Kappa Phi is to ‘develop leaders and encourage service to others,’ and philanthropy is an enormous part of their culture. This event helps to instill the meaning of servant leadership for its brothers, and fight the stereotype of “frat bros.” These guys try to make philanthropy entertaining as well! ΠΚΦ brothers put on music and hand out freebies while riding stationary bikes by Spirit the Tiger Statue. It’s a fun way to raise donations and encourage RIT students participate and help those in need.
