RIT Photo Students

The Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (RIT's former name) began offering its first photography classes in 1901. In 1930, the photographic technology department was established and nine years later, it was split into photographic technology and professional photography.

Here you can see photography students working in the studio sometime between 1945-1955, using strobes and hot lamps to light their subject. While camera technology has certainly changed throughout RIT's years, what's never changed is our photo students' passion for finding lighting that's "just right."
