Even on the best days RIT can get a little plain or stuffy for people that love the outdoors. Henrietta is great for a peaceful educational atmosphere as well as the occasional shopper (let’s face it, there are miles of shopping malls and stores to please even the most extreme shopaholic). Unfortunately, those that crave the outdoors and enjoy activities like camping, hiking, backpacking may feel a bit claustrophobic once the academic term starts. It’s not like there’s a student run organization that meets weekly to run and organize events catered specifically to students that have a passion for the outdoors, right?
Thankfully, RIT does in fact have an Outing and Rockclimbing Club that welcomes people from all ranges of experiences! Meetings are every week on Wednesday at 9PM in Gosnell Building and they even plan trips every week. It all started in the 80’s when a group of students wanted to make use of the huge Red Barn next to the Riverknoll Apartments. Eventually, some students decided to update it and try and clean it out and make it a functioning building so they were the first to found the Outing/Climbing Club!
“We provide a broad range of outdoor activities to match the interests of members. We try to plan trips according to what people want to do, and we are open to anything. In recent years we have participated in backpacking, rock climbing, canoeing, camping, mountain biking, caving, snow shoeing, skiing, snowboarding, white water rafting, and many other activities.”
RIT Outing Club
Are you a beginner and don’t possess the equipment to go on that hiking trip? The Outing Club has a storeroom of equipment underneath NRH for all of your outing needs. There’s no excuse to not get that fresh air now that the warmer months are approaching! You won’t regret it (unless you’re afraid of heights).
