Information About the Excellus BlueCross BlueShield Cyberattack
Excellus BlueCross Blue Shield notified RIT on September 9, 2015 that their computer systems were targeted in a cyberattack. While it has not yet been determined whether any information was used inappropriately or removed, this attack may have provided unauthorized access to personal records. Excellus is the third party administrator for RIT’s employee medical and dental plans. Also potentially included are affiliated companies Lifetime Benefit Solutions (the administrator of RIT’s Beneflex program), Lifetime Care, Lifetime Health Medical Group, MedAmerica Companies (the insurer of long-term care insurance offered by RIT) and Univera Healthcare. Excellus is working with the FBI to investigate the extent of the attack. Excellus will notify members whose records were in the system that was attacked and they will offer two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.
A dedicated website, www.excellusfacts.com, has been established for Excellus members and other affected individuals with information as well as frequently asked questions (FAQ). There is also a link from that site to sign up for the free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services. Excellus has also set up a dedicated call center for all impacted individuals.
