GAMEDES-BS Students - Change to Advanced Elective Requirements:
Game Design and Development students who entered RIT in the fall 2161 (2016) semester and later must complete their Advanced Elective requirements by taking IGM courses, only. In other words, you may only take IGM classes to fulfill your Advanced Elective course requirements.
Game Design and Development students who entered RIT in the fall 2151 (2015) semester and earlier may continue to follow the 50% rule, where up to half of your IGM Advanced Elective requirements may be fulfilled by approved non-IGM classes. The list of pre-approved courses is available in your Academic Advising Report (AAR) in SIS. If you have any questions, please contact your advisor.
Did you enter RIT this fall semester? Schedule your First Year Advising Meeting!
All students who entered into RIT this year are required to attend a meeting with their advisor during fall semester. The goal of this meeting is to start building the advisor advisee relationship and provide information regarding important resources. Incoming students can schedule this meeting via Starfish Connect. It is imperative that incoming students attend this meeting as there is a hold on all incoming student accounts that will prevent them from enrolling in spring semester classes. This hold can only be removed by attending this meeting with your academic advisor. Please e-mail your advisor if you have any questions.
Did you get an e-mail about Mid-Degree Advising Meetings?
You may have received an e-mail from the University Advising Office regarding Mid-Degree Advising meetings. Do not schedule the meeting until you have received an e-mail from your academic advisor asking you to do so. If you would like to meet with your advisor to discuss other topics, you are welcome to do so at any time. You do not need to wait for this meeting. Please e-mail your advisor if you have any questions.
IGM Spring Course Offerings
IGME 480: Current Topics in Interactive Development
We wanted to make you aware of a new addition to the IGM curriculum, IGME 480, Current Topics in Interactive Development. For students that started the New Media Interactive Development degree between Fall 2017 (2171 term) and now, this is a core class to your degree. For all other NMID students and Game Design and Development students, this class will count as an Advanced Elective.
IGME 480 plans to discuss Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality using Unity while partnering with a course and students from New Media Design.

The Spring semester FOSS courses are...
IGME 582, Humanitarian FOSS Development. This course is for those new to, and curious about, Open Source. It’s also open to folks with FOSS experience who want to learn more about humanitarian hacking and FOSS. The final project is to build educational games for the Sugar Labs/OLPC schools around the world. It’s offered MWF 9:00-9:50 in the new building, MSS-2175
IGME 585, Project in FOSS Development. This course is for those who have experience in contributing to FOSS projects. In this course you can continue to contribute to projects you're already working in, get involved in a new FOSS community you’ve been curious about, or pilot a new one of your own. The course will have you research and evaluate FOSS communities and then set up a contribution cycle and set of goals. t’s offered TR 2:00-3:15 in the new building, MSS 3110

IGME-589-02, MWF 11-11:50a– Research Studio – Networked Game Design and Development. This course is for students who wish to explore the architecture and implementation of networked games. In this course, students will learn about the nature of authoritative server approaches, including hardware, infrastructure, communication protocols, game implementation protocols, and game algorithms to implement communication and state synchronization. Research will involve exploration into newer techniques for network games, including emerging standards for web-based game experiences, new low-level protocols for FPS and MMOs, as well as newer techniques for advanced state management that address fairness and latency. The course will also allow students to explore issues related to security in network games as well as scalability to large simultaneous player experiences. Students will explore this topic through a combination of exploring new trends and approaches combined with building experiences. Students will be expected to explore solutions in network enabled languages (such as C++ and/or Java) and by investigating network stack implementations in commonly used game development platforms such as Unity3D and Unreal. Students will be required to implement a game experience either from scratch or by using existing engine technologies that address current and open problems in game protocol development and networked experiences.
IGME 589-03, MWF 1-1:50p Research Studio in Medical Anatomy App Development with Virtual Reality.
This research studio will be a collaboration between IGM and a class in the RIT Medical Illustration department. Both classes will meet at the same time in the same lab, and work together on the same project. Students will develop a tool for medical professionals to study anatomy realtime using virtual reality. Users will be able to view animations and pose the model, to virtually dissect the model to see muscles, veins, bones, etc., and to rotate the model and interact with it realtime – all while in a Virtual Reality environment. Medical Illustration students will be focusing on the assets, including high poly sculpting, normal maps, rigging, and blendshapes. IGM students will be focusing on programming and design tasks such as visualization and simulation development, user interface design, asset integration, and VR implementation. Both classes will be focused on optimization, agile software development, the asset pipeline, and game development best practices.
