College is a big point in many people's lives when they want to better themselves and help better the people around them. One of the best ways that I have seen to accomplish this is becoming a student leader in a field that you have interest in. RIT has many programs, organizations, and clubs where students can take the next step and better themselves with real leadership experience. It's great to always keep in mind that anyone can be a leader, it's all about the passion that a person has for whatever interest they want to lead in. So, let start off by looking at one of the biggest leadership opportunities that RIT offers to students and then I'll share some of my personal experiences.
RIT student government is such a great way to get more experience with different types of people and leading groups of people to aid others. Our student government is run by a diverse pool of students from many different colleges and programs. Their mission is to represent the interest of the student body and give our opinions and concerns a real voice to make a change. They also offer many programs and activities for the students from the bike share program, which I love because it makes it easier to get around campus, to designated nap locations. There's so much that they do for the students of this school and I'm sure they are always looking for new student leaders to help them out and join their ranks.
IGM also has its own set of student leaders, we're called the IGM Ambassadors. We are a mix of Game Design and Development students and New Media Interactive Development students all in different years of our programs. We act as the student voice for our programs and we are constantly trying to change our programs for the better. To do this we hold events every semester for all Game Design and New Media students. Sometimes they can be educational and other times they can be just for fun. We also act as tour guides during open houses to introduce prospective families to IGM and tell them all about the student experience. Another really cool thing that ambassador get to do is talk with prospective faculty members. Getting an understanding of who is going to teach in our department ahead of time lets us understand who they are and their interests. But also, we can show/tell them what the students will be like, which can definitely help them feel like their right at home right from the start. Being an ambassador is great because not only do we get to plan fun events but we get to meet many new people and make strong connections along the way.
Everyone has the capabilities to be a leader, it's just having the courage and determination to take that next step. When/if you do make that step, RIT has so many opportunities for its students, that you'll definitely be able to find one that you'll enjoy.
