Vision & Mission

IGM Vision

The School of Interactive Games and Media shall be nationally and internationally renowned for innovative approaches to media-centric computing that merge the creative design of the interactive experience with the development of content, technologies, and systems that form the basis of such work.  The school will support, wherever and whenever possible, multi-disciplinary work that fuses these elements in pursuit of its academic mission.

IGM Mission

The IGM School is comprised of talented and motivated individuals from a variety of academic backgrounds with a shared interest in computing as it relates to interactive and social media, new media, games, simulations, and media-centric systems of all varieties. The school's mission is to provide a sustained educational environment that supports and encourages creative and collaborative academic inquiry by both faculty and students into these areas. The school's programs, coursework, research, and development efforts will provide students with the knowledge and skills to pursue meaningful and rewarding careers in this arena, while simultaneously advancing the field and helping to provide a well-rounded educational experience.

School Goals

  1. The academic programs of the school will prepare students for careers in fields related to media-centric computing.  Measured through course evaluations, feedback and review from the industrial and academic advisory board (IAAB), employment statistics, co-op placement and review metrics, and alumni tracking. (i.e., “program assessment”.)
  2. The school will support collaborative and multi-disciplinary approaches to academic inquiry that relates to media-centric computing. Measured through review of courses that involve a group-work component, student peer evaluations of such, identification and measured success of projects that involve multiple degree programs, departments, colleges, or units on campus, and/or faculty and students from differing academic backgrounds.
  3. The school will offer curricula that continues to illustrate current industry concepts and employ cutting-edge educational strategies. Measured through the review and assessment of the curricula, publication and presentation of our curricula and coursework by the faculty, and through the accreditation processes of the Institute.
  4. The school will provide an environment that sustains and supports research and development in any or all of Boyer’s classifications (i.e., discovery, integration, application, and teaching), with an emphasis on projects that involve students of all levels. Measured through identification, involvement, and review of projects that meet such criteria, and through established partnerships with external entities both on-campus and world-wide in support of such work.

The school will contribute to the broader academic field of media-centric computing. Measured through partnerships, publications, presentations, gallery showings, interactive installations, distributed interactive works, and/or general dissemination of our work to regional, national, and international shows, conferences, and the industry at large.
