  7. Golisano College Dean's Lecture Series

    Established in 2003, the Golisano College Dean's Lecture Series brings some of the leading minds in tech to RIT to share their insights with students, faculty, alumni, parents, and the community. Join us as we will kick off the 2016-17 academic year during Brick City Homecoming & Family Weekend with our very own Rochester Institute Technology Distinguished Professor Vicki Hanson! This year, Dr. Hanson was elected as the president for the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). She has been recognized for her career-long work on issues of inclusion for people with disabilities, including the development of award-winning applications and software that support older adults and individuals with hearing and vision impairments. Dr. Hanson will speak on Advancing Computing as a Science and Profession.


    

    Abstract: I was recently honored to be elected President of ACM (the Association for Computing Machinery).   ACM is the oldest and largest global computing society supporting the careers of 3 million computing professionals and students through our services.  This talk with consider a few hot topics within computing, based on both my personal research interests in human centered computing and accessibility, as well as hot topics within the profession.  Professional topics will include both technology development as it affects society, along with how create a work force able to shape our
    future technology for the benefit of all.


    Bio:

    Dr. Hanson has been working on issues of inclusion throughout her career, first as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, then at IBM Research where she founded and managed the Accessibility Research group. At RIT, as well as the University of Dundee in Scotland, her research has focused on accessibility of technology for people with disabilities, the aging population, and related research ethics. She was the Vice President of ACM and served as a member of the ACM Executive Committee and Council, on the ACM-W Europe Executive Committee, and on the ACM Fellows Awards Committee (Chair, 2015). She has been honored with a Royal Society Research Merit Award, the ACM SIGACCESS Outstanding Contributions Award (2014), the Anita Borg Woman of Vision Award for Social Impact (2013), the ACM SIGCHI Social Impact Award (2008), and an IBM Corporate Award for Contributions to Accessibility (2009).

The designation is the highest standard in the rating system, placing it among the top 1 % of all green buildings in the United States today. Learn about the geothermal heating and cooling system, 400 kW fuel cell, rainwater management system, green roof, and high performance building envelope. Visit many of the labs and testbeds to learn about exciting and innovative research initiatives focusing on sustainable production, sustainable energy, mobility, manufacturing, and ecologically friendly information technology systems.
