Adjunct Associate Professor Richard Napoli, AIA, is currently a Design Director at Smith + Associates Architects in Rochester. He holds a B.Arch. from New York Institute of Technology and has been in private practice of Architecture and Interior Architecture for the past 32 years: in New York City, Elmira, and Binghamton, NY. Now for the last 13 years, he and his family have called Rochester, New York their home.

Richard's experience as an architect has been an eclectic one: he has designed/participated in the design of a diverse assemblage of project types including for retail, commercial, universities: academic, labs, dining, and campus centers. Corporate work includes headquarters, office planning, and conference centers. Specialty projects include master planning, recording/video post-production studios, animal hospitals and even houses for elephants (His biggest clients!). He is strongly focused on all aspects of design and especially that of interior architecture; which is a special expertise. He has been involved in various chapters of the AIA, and mentors both in practice, as well as to young professionals for the AIA and Emerging Rochester Architects.

At Bergmann Associates, Richard was a principal of design in the Commercial/Retail studio and developed designs for renovation and new construction for retail centers across the United States. Projects that Richard has been involved with have been recognized by AIA for design excellence and by USGBC, from Certified to Platinum designation. Outside of architecture, Richard pursues the following activities, including: landscaping, fine art watercolor Asian brush and acrylic painting, sketching, reading, and cooking.
