RIT's Printing Applications Lab produces first certification for Canon Alliance Partner Program

MELVILLE, N.Y., Feb. 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its continued drive to expand collaboration with key players in the large-format industry, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to welcome Breathing Color, a designer and supplier of award-winning digital inkjet canvas, papers, and canvas coatings, as a new member of the Canon Alliance Partner Program (CAPP) for imagePROGRAF Large-Format Solutions.

Through CAPP, third-party media and software companies are able to work with Canon to help develop and promote new printing solutions for imagePROGRAF devices. As a result of this association, five fine-art media types offered by Breathing Color have now been certified for use with the imagePROGRAF PRO-6000, PRO-4000, PRO-2000, and PRO-1000 devices.

"Canon always welcomes the opportunity to join forces with industry partners to help spur innovation and expand what's possible for imagePROGRAF customers." said Toyotsugu Kuwamura, executive vice president and general manager, Business Imaging Solutions Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "Through CAPP, end users are able to choose from even more options for media and know that these offerings provide a Canon-certified high standard of quality to match the extraordinary output that they expect from their PRO series  devices. On behalf of Canon, I welcome Breathing Color as the latest CAPP member and look forward to continuing to collaborate with them to help our customers get the most out of our products."

"We are so excited to partner with Canon through the CAPP program. Any Canon users who may be unfamiliar with our award-winning inkjet canvas, papers, and canvas coatings will quickly see how we can add value to their business." said Nick Friend, founder and president of Breathing Color. "Since I started Breathing Color in 2003, we have continued to innovate and to pioneer the print making industry. An important part of achieving superior print quality is using the highest quality printer and inks from leaders like Canon. We are looking forward to a long-lasting relationship in the Canon Alliance Partnership Program."

Under the CAPP program, partners can submit media for testing to receive a certification confirming compatibility with specific printers in the imagePROGRAF family of products.  The following Breathing Color media types have been certified for the PRO series 12-channel printers and are now available to customers:

  • Vibrance Gloss Photo Paper
  • Vibrance Luster Photo Paper
  • Optica One Smooth Fine Art Paper
  • Elegance Velvet Textured Fine Art Paper
  • Lyve Canvas

The  Canon imagePROGRAF PRO Series line of large format devices ranges from 17 to 60 inches and are designed to deliver output solutions for photographers and graphic artists who are "equally obsessed" with the printed image.  All devices included in Canon's PRO Series help users achieve spectacular high-quality output and share the same core technologies, including 12 ink channels, embedded color calibration, and ability to share ICC profiles across devices.

Companies can apply to join the CAPP program, and upon acceptance, must ensure that that their products offer proven, Canon-approved compatibility with imagePROGRAF devices. For media partners, the third-party company submits their media for testing to the Rochester Institute of Technology(RIT)'s Printing Applications Laboratory (PAL) at the Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies, a university based, independent laboratory that conducts print media evaluation and image/print quality analysis in the conventional and digital printing industry. Following certification, CAPP partners then have the opportunity to team with Canon to pursue joint marketing activities as well as to expand their business to Canon customers.

Canon, RIT Partner to Create Certification Program for imagePROGRAF Systems

MELVILLE, N.Y.—October 22, 2015—Creating great works of art not only requires advanced technology, but also the proper media. For the first time, Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging, has announced it will join Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Printing Applications Laboratory, in offering a streamlined media certification process. This collaboration will help photography, fine art and paper vendors determine and promote compatibility with the imagePROGRAF portfolio, including the newly announced imagePROGRAF PRO-1000.
As part of this Canon Alliance Partner Program (CAPP), an initiative that allows third-party suppliers and vendors to align their business goals with Canon products, RIT will test media with imagePROGRAF systems to confirm compatibility. The testing looks into both paper properties and print properties. A few of the attributes tested include grammage, caliper, opacity, registration, line raggedness and optical density, among many others.* Upon passing the test, vendors will receive a certification enabling them to advertise media compatibility with imagePROGRAF systems.
In addition to helping photographers identify high-quality media, the certification can also unlock a realm of new possibilities for vendors, including the potential to expand the customer base, opportunities to be included in future imagePROGRAF portfolios, company presence on the Canon U.S.A. website, partnership with Canon for trade shows and access to imagePROGRAF systems.
RIT’s Printing Applications Lab provides the print industry with empirical approaches to control and improve the quality of their products and expand on the knowledge of industry professionals. From media certification programs to assistance with product development and corporate education programs, RIT’s Printing Applications Lab has the tools to educate industry professionals, and help companies improve existing products.
