About the Staples Sustainable Innovation Laboratory

The Staples Sustainable Innovation Laboratory (SSIL) within the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at the Rochester Institute of Technology was funded by a generous gift from Staples Inc.

Staples is the world’s largest office products company and a trusted source for office solutions. The company provides products, services and expertise in office supplies, copy and print, technology, facilities and breakroom, and furniture. Staples invented the office superstore concept in 1986 and now has annual sales of $25 billion, ranking second in the world in e-commerce sales. With 88,000 associates worldwide, Staples operates in 26 countries throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia, making it easy for businesses of all sizes, and consumers. (Staples 2011 Annual report)

Staples has expressed a commitment to making a positive impact on the environment (Staples Sustainability Report) by offering more sustainable products and services and advancing eco-smart business solutions for the 21st century (Sustainable Earth). The purpose of the Staples gift is to support a public working research lab and test bed for sustainable products, processes, and packaging with a focus on the office environment. The Staples Sustainable Innovation Lab will be a research hub to assist in the development of sustainable office products and business practices worldwide. The lab will also work with product suppliers to help find innovative solutions for product design, manufacturing and packaging that reduce environmental impacts. In addition, the lab will serve as a venue for sustainability education.

The SSIL's objectives are to provide guidance in the sustainability of conducting business by:

Providing high quality research opportunities, facilities, and funding to help shape the future of sustainable office products and business processes

Providing a testbed for the piloting and demonstration of new products, technologies and practices

Engaging communities and partners to increase public training and acceptance of sustainable business products and practices.
