On April 30, 2021, President David C. Munson Jr. and lead donor and Trustee Austin McChord BS ’09 revealed the winner of the Name the IMLC student contest and the permanent name of the Innovative Maker and Learning Complex! The student contest winner that created the permanent name of our largest construction project in RIT history was Jonathan Dharmadi '22.
The new name will be the SHED.
About The SHED: The Student Hall for Exploration and Development (SHED) will be a place where the makers, doers, and thinkers of RIT can come together and explore through experiential learning and develop their dreams and ideas into reality.
Student: Highlights the makers, doers, and thinkers of RIT. The collaboration of all students at the intersection of technology, art, and design.
Hall: A place for meeting, where students come together.
Exploration: Highlights the use of Experiential Learning, learning by doing.
Development: Promotes the advancement of making, building, and blending technology, art, and design.
The SHED is more than just a building. It will be an impressive demonstration of the RIT experience. Anticipated to open in the fall of 2023, this complex will be the most ambitious construction project undertaken since the Henrietta campus was created in 1968.
This student-centered environment will be built to respond to the needs and desires of the student body. With an all-inclusive approach from representation on the building vision committee to choosing the permanent name of the facility, students are and will be the first and foremost focus of this new, innovative space on our campus.
