Bruce is a long-time friend and generous benefactor of the university. He established two named scholarships that have collectively supported over 300 students to date. In 2015, Bruce created the Women’s Hockey Coach Endowed Fund, which provided the university’s first named endowed coaching position for Tiger athletic programs. His gift supports the salary of the women’s head hockey coach in perpetuity, and provides budget relief for athletics.
More recently, Bruce gave a generous gift to create the Bruce B. Bates Endowed Professorship, which will provide funding for an esteemed faculty member and their research. Endowed professorships are the highest honor a university can bestow upon faculty, allowing RIT to compete for scholars who are in demand around the country and in the world. He is a 1996 recipient of the Nathaniel Rochester Society Award, which recognized individuals who had contributed to the university’s advancement in an outstanding and significant manner. Bruce is Honorary Chair and Chair Emeritus of the RIT Board of Trustees. He was elected to the Board in 1970 and he is celebrating 50 years of service on the Board this fall.
