Housing Selection 2021-2022

The RIT Housing Selection process is split into two phases - Housing Renewal and Room Selection. Find which phase you are eligible for and become familiar with the process. As you choose your housing, consider if you will search for housing as an individual or with a roommate(s). Make sure to review our residences, rates, and housing comparison tool to choose the housing option that is the best fit for you.

Housing Renewal

Housing Renewal is the process of renewing your housing contract for the space you are currently living in for the 2021 – 2022 academic year.

Eligibility

Students who currently live in:

Students who are graduating are not eligible to sign-up.

Step 1: Complete a Contract
October 19, 2020 - October 25, 2020

Renew your space in your current housing as an individual by completing the 2021-2022 academic year housing contract. The Housing contract will not be available until 12:01 a.m. on October 19, 2020.

  • Navigate to mylife.rit.edu October 19 – 25
  • Login with your RIT computer account username and password
  • Click on the Housing & Dining Applications icon
  • Select the contract for the 2021 – 2022 academic year
  • When completing your online contract, click on “Renew Room Space” and hit submit
  • If your renewal has processed, you will receive an email notification verifying your renewal for the 2021-2022 academic year.
  • Your application status in the portal will state Renewal when you have completed your renewal.

Step 2: Request a Roommate
November 2, 2020 - November 13, 2020

If you renewed your current housing (step 1) you will receive an email notification if the apartment, suite, or room you renewed has any vacancies for the 2021-2022 academic year. You will have between November 2 - 13 to request a roommate(s) to fill the vacancy.

First:

  • Inform the student you plan to request as a roommate to immediately complete a 2021-2022 RIT Housing contract via mylife.rit.edu. The student must have a contract completed in order for you to request them as a roommate.
  • Give this student your assignment housing location and unit number. Example: Riverknoll 210
  • Ask the student you are going to request as a roommate for their username and their preferred name as you will need this information when you go to the portal to submit a request for a roommate.
  • Give the student to be requested your username and preferred name.

Next:

  • Navigate to mylife.rit.edu and return to your 2021-2022 RIT Housing contract that was completed during renewal.
  • Go to “Next Steps” on the left and select “Roommate Requests” in the drop-down menu and hit continue.
  • Fill in the preferred name and RIT username of the student being requested. You will only be able to request a student who has completed a 2020-2021 RIT Housing contract.
  • When you request a roommate the other students on contract for the same RIT housing will receive an email informing them of your request. They will take no action unless they do not approve of the roommate being requested. If they do not approve of the requested roommate, they will follow the instructions in the email.
  • When the requested roommate accepts the request an email will be sent to all the students on contract for that same housing informing them of the new roommate.
  • Navigate to mylife.rit.edu and return to your 2021-2022 RIT Housing contract
  • Go to “Next steps” on the left and select “Roommate Requests” in the drop down menu and hit continue
  • Choose “Accept a Roommate Request” in the drop-down menu and hit continue
  • Input the information requested
    • Unit/apartment name and number
    • The preferred name of the student who placed the request
    • RIT Username of the student who placed the request

After the request has been sent and accepted, there is a 24 hour wait period for any objections from the students currently living in the apartment/suite. If there are no objections, RIT Housing will be able to add the requested roommate to the space.

If two or more vacancies remain in your apartment or suite after the Renewal process has ended, you may be contacted regarding consolidation. Consolidation will only happen within the same housing type and location proximity. The RIT Housing assignment team will work with you individually for any assignment adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Appointment dates and times are assigned in class standing order with current first year students going first, followed by second-, third-, fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-year students.
  • Within each year level, students will be randomly ordered by a computer program. This random ordering will not occur until the day before appointment times are emailed to students.

For the purpose of Room Selection, you will remain in the first-year grouping.

The residence halls, RIT Inn, Perkins Green and Riverknoll apartments, University Commons suites and Global Village suites will be available during room selection.

If you complete a 21-22 RIT housing contract for Room Selection, but do not select a room or add yourself to a waitlist, RIT Housing will add you to a waitlist based on your preferences.

Students who do not fill the vacancy(ies) in their apartments/suites by 11:59 p.m. on November 13, will no longer have the opportunity to request a roommate(s). The vacancy will be entered into the available space pool for Room Selection process.
