Industrial Applications of Advanced Augmented Reality Technology- Case Study of Computer Repair

In recent years, augmented reality (AR) applications have become a popular research topic in the open literature and have been widely used in various applications in several fields, such as biomedical engineering, educational and industrial settings. AR is an innovative technology that integrates virtual objects into a real-world environment. This exhibit shows a computer memory card replacement task video, a prototype demonstration of how smart AR headsets are implemented in industrial applications. While the users are repairing a computer while wearing a head display unit, they can see instructions when looking at particular target zones corresponding to specific computer system components. This AR technique provides integration of the information such as standard procedure descriptions (graphical/ text), tutorial videos, and observable parts position indicators, which are meant to provide users with a better understanding of the entire repair/assembly procedure. By utilizing this approach, users are taken through the repair procedure step by step whilst following the tutorial materials in real-time, allowing them to conduct a memory card replacement themselves. The hands-free and recognition-friendly interaction design of this system enable its users to manipulate the virtual panel easily. Today, training for various tasks in workshop settings generally relies on the support of more experienced professionals and manual guidebooks. In the future, the outcomes of this study can be used in related applications such as machine maintenance, repair, or new operator/professional training, which might significantly improve production efficiency, improve training procedures by reducing personnel labor and downtime.
